Editor’s Note: David M. Perry is a journalist, historian and senior academic adviser in the history department of the University of Minnesota. CNN —In recent days, protests by college students against Israel’s actions in the ongoing war in Gaza have popped up across the country. Concerned faculty at the University of Texas-Austin called a strike to protest police actions against peaceful protestors. But then, in the year 1200 CE, a group of students in Paris got swindled by a shopkeeper. They are a reminder that institutions of higher learning are a union between teachers and students dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.

Turkey may deploy its Russian S-400 Triumf air defenses on the Iraqi border. Turkiye newspaper reported earlier this month that Turkey's S-400s may be deployed on the border, implying it will defend against drones allegedly acquired by the PKK. Since then, there has been no indication that Turkey's S-400s have been put into operation. "However, Turkey may use the potential threat of Iran-linked militia groups or PKK as a pretext to deploy S-400s." "Such a goal was unattainable and unrealistic given the extent of Turkey's integration into the NATO defense system," Ozeren said.

Israeli forces stormed a Palestinian hospital in the occupied West Bank early Tuesday morning, killing three militants, including a commander in Hamas, according to the Israeli military and Palestinian officials. They then went to the room where the Hamas commander, Mohammad Jalamneh, 27, was staying with two friends, and shot all three dead, Mr. Sbeihat said. The Israeli military said all three had been involved in militant activity, including attacks against Israelis. One of the men accompanying him, Basil Ghazawi, was being treated in the hospital’s rehabilitation ward, Mr. Sbeihat said. More than 2,960 Palestinians have been arrested since the beginning of the war in near-daily raids, according to the Israeli military.

Jerusalem CNN —Israeli special forces, dressed as civilians and medical staff, infiltrated the Ibn Sina hospital in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday and killed three Palestinian men, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials. Official data shows a significant, smaller increase in anti-Muslim incidents in Britain and is patchy for the other two countries. "The vast majority of Muslims do not file a complaint when they are victims of such acts. A spokesperson for France's national police acknowledged data on anti-Muslim incidents was "incomplete", and relied on victims filing a complaint. For some Muslims in Germany, which has welcomed about a million Syrians and just under 400,000 Afghans in recent years, rising hostility came as a surprise.

Over the weekend, five Palestinians were killed in Jenin during another Israeli incursion, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The man had been shot in the leg and while paramedics attempted to transport him to the Jenin Government Hospital, he was arrested by the Israeli military, Al-Saadi said. The PRCS’s emergency medical services team attending to the injured man were also held for about an hour in front of the hospital by the Israeli military, he said. “The Israeli military stopped the ambulance for around one hour in front of the hospital” before taking the injured man away in an Israeli military ambulance, Al-Saadi said. Israel’s war with Hamas has increasingly spilled over into the West Bank with settler attacks and clashes leaving hundreds of Palestinians dead.

The badly decomposed body of Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj was eventually found in an underground tunnel at the compound. She said her husband and his sister traveled abroad to learn more about alternative healing based on the Quran. After she demanded a divorce, Ramzi said that Siraj Ibn Wahhaj took their son to a park and never returned. Morton and Siraj Ibn Wahhaj were also charged with conspiracy to kill U.S. government personnel. Leveille was initially charged with kidnapping and terrorism-related charges but she has agreed to accept a reduced sentence on weapons charges.

The changes narrow the case to terrorism and kidnapping charges against five defendants in a trial scheduled to begin Monday with jury selection at U.S. District Court in Albuquerque. Sheriff’s deputies and state agents initially found 11 hungry children and a small arsenal of ammunition and guns. After days of searching, they recovered the decomposed remains of the 3-year-old in an underground tunnel. Kidnapping charges are pending against four of the defendants but not Siraj Wahhaj because of his legal status as the father of the deceased boy. Morton also plans to act as his own legal counsel at trial.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have signed multibillion-dollar deals for Turkish drones in recent months. Azeri Ministry of DefenseSaudi Arabia previously showed interest in procuring Turkish drones and securing rights for local production. Bakir told Insider that Turkish drones have gained "global recognition" due to their "affordability, efficiency, and lethal capabilities" and documented successes over modern battlefields. "Moreover, Saudi Arabia could use such capabilities to balance Iran's drone technology in the long run," Ozeren said. Ozeren said the Saudi deal could help Baykar "monopolize" drone technology in Turkey but noted that crucial details about the agreement remain unknown.

The shooting of Nahel M. took place on Tuesday, followed by four nights of violent rioting in major French cities, and nothing suggested any return to calm as the young man’s funeral unfolded. His uncle, flanked by friends and security agents employed by the mosque, yelled abuse at anyone trying to film the proceedings. It would have been a dangerous provocation for any uniformed French police officer to appear. They would have gotten away with it, he said, but for the appearance of the apparently incriminating video that went viral. “The government always protects the police, a state within the state,” he said.

The anise-flavored liquor is one of the oldest spirits in the world. He noted that it’s still common for Middle Eastern restaurants to stock European wines rather than traditional spirits like arak. He was experimenting to refine the production of al-kohl, a traditional form of eyeliner, according to Arak Muaddi, a Palestinian craft distillery. Nader Muaddi, the founder of Arak Muaddi, explained that producing arak starts with creating wine. The Middle East has “a very rich history of making wine and spirits, and it’s about time that we share it with the world,” Muaddi went on.

The proposed plan was detailed in communications and business documents seen by Reuters, as well as by a person familiar with the matter. Reuters was unable to confirm independently whether President Erdogan and his son Bilal were aware of, or had involvement in Dignita's alleged kickback scheme. In 2016, Italian prosecutors conducted a money-laundering probe into Bilal Erdogan on suspicion he had brought cash into the country without declaring it.

[1/5] A view shows the City of the Dead, where tombs and historic cemeteries have been demolished due to a new construction project underway on the Salah Salem road, in the capital city of Cairo, Egypt, June 13, 2023. Known as the City of the Dead, the cemeteries along the eastern edge of Historic Cairo have been a resting place for Egypt's deceased since the arrival of Islam in the seventh century A.D. Some tomb owners who want to transfer the bodies of their family members say they are given little time beforehand. But only 102 sites among more than 2.5 million tombs in the area have received this designation, conservationists say. "I imagine that in five years' time, we won't find anything except maybe 20% of the current City of the Dead," Lafi said.
